Every year on August 27, Orthodox believers revere the memory of St. Fanuris, baking a special pie - fanuropitis. This ritual dessert, prepared with prayer, has a symbolic meaning: it helps the believer to find answers to important life questions, strengthen faith, and to young girls to find a worthy spouse. After the festive service, the pie is distributed to all those present, as a sign of divine blessing.
The legend of the monk and the temple
Information about the life of the monk Fanuris is contradictory and covered with a veil of secrets. Historians suggest that he arrived at Cyprus from the mainland in antiquity, but the exact dates and circumstances of his life remain unknown. According to legend, he lived in a small cave, where he indulged in prayer and spiritual cleansing. Already during his lifetime, he became famous for numerous miracles, helping sick and needy. After his death, the locals built a snow -white temple in his honor, and the cave itself became a place of worship.
The interior of the temple is striking in its atmosphere. Here you can see many icons depicting St. Fanuris, the Virgin and Christ. On stone ledges, lamps are burning, which the parishioners light up, turning to the saint with prayers and gratitude.
The story of St. Fanuris and His suffering
The legend of St. Fanuris dates back to the 3rd century, but his veneration became widespread only in the 16th century. History is associated with an amazing discovery: during the reconstruction of the destroyed walls on the Greek island of Rhodes, ancient ruins were found. Among them, archaeologists discovered icons, most of which were damaged. However, one was preserved in perfect condition - a young man was depicted on it in a cloak, with a cross and a lit candle in his hands. This image has become the only known evidence of the existence of the saint.
The icon also depicts 12 brands, each of which tells about the torment of Fanuris. He was subjected to brutal torture, scourged, tormented with iron claws, threw it to wild animals and burned in a fire furnace. He accepted these trials with dignity and faith, sacrificing himself for the sake of Christian teaching.

Over the centuries of the Christian faith, many ascetics were looking for solitude in such places where, through prayers and austerity, they strove for spiritual perfection.
