The origins of the abbey: early 12th century

Bellapais was founded by the Augustinian Order in the 12th century. Its first inhabitants were monks who sought solitude and spiritual purification. The name of the abbey translates as “Beautiful World” or “White World”, which emphasized its ideal location among mountains and forests, away from the bustle.

The Cypriot kings Hugo III and Hugo IV from the Lusignan dynasty played a special role in the construction of the monastery. It was during their reign that most of the buildings were erected, including the magnificent church with Gothic vaults.

Title "White Abbey"

The monastery received its second name thanks to the snow-white robes of the monks. These clothes not only reflected their vows of purity and modesty, but also protected them from the scorching Cypriot sun. Whiteness also symbolized light and spiritual enlightenment, making the abbey a magnet for pilgrims from all over the world.

Heyday: XIII century

Bellapais reached its peak in the 13th century. By this time, the abbey had become not only the spiritual, but also the economic center of the region. A special role was played by the will of the knight Roger Normand, who donated 600 gold coins and a piece of the Life-Giving Cross to the monastery.

Influx of pilgrims

The fame of the shrine spread throughout the Catholic world. Pilgrims from Europe and the Middle East flocked here to touch the relic. A visit to Bellapais became a symbol of spiritual purification, and its monks were known for their asceticism and strict observance of vows.

Strict monastic rule

The monks of Bellapais lived in solitude, hardly communicating with each other. Their days were spent in prayer and work. Even in winter they slept in unheated cells without using blankets. This rule did not apply to high-ranking guests, among whom were members of the Lusignan royal families.

Tragic XIV century: plunder and decline

In the 14th century, the fate of the abbey changed dramatically. The Genoese invaders who appeared in Kyrenia plundered the monastery. The loss of relics and material wealth was only the beginning of troubles.

Moral decline

After the looting, many monks retreated from strict canons. Contrary to their vows of celibacy, they began to cohabit with women and even engage in polygamy. Bellapais turned from a sacred place into a center of debauchery, which completely undermined its reputation.

Change of owners

Later, the monastery came under the control of the Turks, who expelled the Catholic monks and transferred the complex to the Cypriot Orthodox Church. In the 19th century, the abbey fell into the hands of the British, who used it as a military facility.

Legends of Bellapais: mysteries of the past

Many legends surround the walls of Bellapais. One of the most famous is associated with the punishment of monks who violated their vow.

The legend of the cypress trees

According to legend, the abbot found two monks with their mistresses. As punishment, sinners were buried alive in different corners of the courtyard, and cypress trees were planted over their graves. These trees, growing to this day, never touch their branches, symbolizing eternal separation.

Bellapais architecture: treasures of the Middle Ages

Church

The Gothic abbey church, built in the 12th century, is one of the best examples of the architecture of the time. Its high arches and graceful windows delight visitors.

Refectory (refectory)

On the ground floor there is a spacious dining room, the dimensions of which are impressive - 27 by 38 meters.

• During the English period the room was used as a shooting range and bullet marks can still be seen on the walls.

• At the entrance to the refectory there are sarcophagi from Salamis, which are over 1800 years old. They were used as washbasins for washing hands.

Cellars

Under the refectory there are cellars where the monks stored food. These premises allowed the abbey to be autonomous for a long time, even during wars or natural disasters.

Courtyard and arches

The courtyard is surrounded by Gothic arches, creating a harmonious atmosphere. Here you can see the remains of a two-story building where the monks' cells were once located.
